Anime: Currently watching and next general review topic

So I’ve been watching two new animes lately: Lucky Star and Skip-Beat!. I’ve been watching the dubbed version of Lucky Star, but I’ve been watching the fansub of Skip-Beat!, because it’s still only airing in Japan – and I haven’t heard any news about the anime being brought over to the States.

As far as both shows go, I’ve watched up to episode 20 for both. The last four episodes of Lucky Star will be released towards the end of this coming week. Episode 21 of Skip-Beat! has already aired I believe, and the fansub will probably be up tomorrow for viewing. Once I see the final episodes of Lucky Star, I will be doing one of my general review post for the series. Skip-Beat! I’m still unsure of, however. For one, thought I really like the series, took a while to fully grabbed me in a way that many anime series have, though I absolutely loved the first few episodes and the first opening for the show, which can view below:

(Being a fan of anime definitely turns you into a fan of Jpop music as well).

The main problem I had with it was that – even though I think the overall story is awesome, the series actually gets slightly boring halfway through the first arc, starting at about around episode 7 and not picking up much until after episode 13. That is not a good thing IMO. However, things have definitely picked up now with the show, expecially in the arc dealing with the main character Kyoko getting a job acting in her shallow-ex-boyfriend’s PV (i.e. music video).

Also, I’m not sure how many episode the show is scheduled for, though I’m guessing it has to be more than 24, given what I’ve gone on to read of the manga. If the show goes on for too long however, and things start getting dragged out (such as what happened from episodes 7 to 13), it could end up for me in the InuYasha category – namely, an anime I like, but that just went on for too long for me to care.

The next general review I’m going to write will be on Ouran High School Host Club I believe, as I have been re-watching some episodes in the series lately. I’m going to aim for Monday at the latest, though I don’t know how much I can get done tomorrow, as I’m planning on just hanging out with my best friend that day, something I will post about probably late tomorrow. So, until then . . .

Anime Series: Death Note – Review

So I want to post some regular reviews of episodes of my favorite anime shows, but it’s rather hard from me to review episodes to TV shows after I’ve already know the ending to the series. I always get the urge to talk about things that I know are coming up, but will pretty much spoil the series for people who may not yet have watched any of it.

So this post doesn’t contain an official “review” of any of the specific episodes of the Death Note series, so much as just a random review dealing with how I view the entire series, and just overall impression. General reviews like this won’t contain much in the way of major spoilers, though there will be minor ones, mostly having to do with characters I like or don’t like, and how they come off in the series. Full episode review posts, however, will be different and contain plenty of spoilers throughout.

Since I’ve been taking screen caps from my DVD of Death Note for a web layout I’m planning, I decided to start these anime series/episode review thoughts with this series instead of a more obvious one like such as Ouran or Fullmetal Alchemist. Thoughts about the first episodes of those two series, however, will follow pretty soon, as I don’t plan on staying with just one series as a time while I do these write ups.

Death Note

The human whose name is written in this note shall die.

That is the first rule listed in a notebook found by the main character at the beginning of the Death Note anime series, and the overall general premise of the show. Whomever has their name written in the notebook – called a “Death Note” – will die, no matter what.

The way I first heard about this series actually came about when I was doing some research online for some original fiction I’m working on. I was checking some of the entries on TvTropes, a web page/wiki dedicated to documenting various tropes found in all forms of media, and notes some famous examples of said tropes. While looking around at some tropes, (notably, The Chessmaster and Xanatos Gambit tropes) I noticed that Death Note was a series that kept getting mentioned a lot. Looking up the series, my first thought was it sounded good, but very dark; while I do like dark stories, there can be a time when a story can get too dark for its own good. However, again being on the lookout for any new anime series to watch, I decided to check it out, thinking that – having read up a little on some plot points – I knew what to expect.

Little did I know.

The Rather Long Story of How I Became an Anime and Manga Fan – Part II

I’ve turned friends on to Fullmetal Alchemist.

Well, okay, one friend, my best friend since childhood. But she sat down and watched it; the whole series, plus the movie. We watched a block of episodes of it one night well past 3 AM, and only stopped because sleep – at that point – was necessary.

That’s how addicting FMA can be.

However, when I first heard about FMA, my first instinct was to avoid it. Because it was so popular. One of the first places I ever heard about FMA was Fandom Wank, a site dedicated to reporting (and laughing) at fans acting too serious, getting in flame wars, etc in fandom. I sometimes make reports there on things I find laugh out loud worthy, and read it often to keeps up on various fandom going-ons. (I first really heard about Twilight from Fandom Wank, and found out all the plots of the books in the series from there). And during the time I was looking into other anime series’ that might interest me, I remembered having read some Fandom Wank reports about Fullmetal Alchemist fandom on there. From reading some things, FMA seemed to be the most popular anime of all time among many anime fans.

The Rather Long Story of How I Became an Anime and Manga Fan – Part I

So, it should be rather obvious by now that I’m quite an Anime and Manga fan. But I can tell you right now, it really wasn’t always so. In fact, while I had seen a few animes – mostly movies – in my time, (and like one or two of them), I never sought out ones to watch. Before 2006, if I saw an anime, I usually caught it by accident from staying up late and having the TV on some UHF channel. This was all before Adult Swim, of course.

As for Manga – well, needless to say, if I had heard of them at the time I don’t think I knew what they were at all.

I was in High School when Sailor Moon first started to air in the US. And I honestly thought it was one of the dumbest shows I’d ever seen. The story seemed so stupid and it was just so horribly dubbed. And by horribly dubbed, I mean that the words coming from the characters didn’t seem to match at all the way the mouths were moving. The stupid dialogue I attributed more to the script back then, and that they were just going by what had really been said in the Japanese version of the show. This, of course was before I knew anything of how anime dubs were actually done.
